This is my personal website. I collect as little as I can, I don’t sell your information, and I don’t show ads. I’m responsible for how it’s handled.
What I collect
- Contact form: your name, email and message. I use them to reply to you. They’re stored in my site’s database and sent to my email (Apple iCloud Mail). Akismet (Automattic) checks them, along with your IP address and browser details, for spam.
- New-post emails: if you subscribe, WordPress.com (Automattic) keeps your email address to send you new posts. You confirm first, and every email has an unsubscribe link.
- Visits: Jetpack Stats (Automattic) counts visits without cookies. I only see totals. This site also counts page visits, time on page, scrolling, link clicks, which page on this site a visit came from, page speed and games started and finished itself, without cookies or IDs, as daily totals. Nothing is stored on your device. If your browser sends Global Privacy Control, you aren’t counted.
- Security: my security plugin and my web host (Namecheap) log IP addresses and browser details to block spam and break-in attempts. The login and password-reset pages also use Google reCAPTCHA, which sends Google your IP address and browser details to check that you’re not a bot.
Cookies
My site doesn’t set cookies for visitors. A few older posts embed a Google Map, a YouTube video or an Instagram post. When you open those posts, those companies may set cookies and collect your IP address. YouTube preview images elsewhere don’t set cookies, and a video only plays if you click it.
On the Daily TV view, the “ISS live” background plays NASA’s live video from YouTube. It only loads if you pick it, and then YouTube may store data in your browser and collect your IP address.
On the Daily page, if you close, move, hide, widen or pin a box, filter Getting around, pick your transit lines or highways or choose a longer forecast, your browser remembers that on your own device. It also remembers when you last looked and what the page showed, so it can point out what’s new, and it keeps a copy of the Daily page so it still opens without a connection. On the Games page, your browser also remembers your puzzles in progress, the ones you’ve solved today, how many days in a row you’ve solved one and which game you played last, and your best Fruit Drop score. If you play Fruit Drop on separate devices, a short room code and each player’s fruit and score pass through this site and are deleted within 10 minutes after play stops. No names are asked for and nothing is kept. It also keeps a copy of the Games page so it opens without a connection. None of this is sent to me, and clearing your browser data removes it.
Who else handles data
Automattic (stats, subscriptions, spam checks and images), Namecheap (hosting), Google (backups of my site’s database in Google Drive, and reCAPTCHA on the login pages) and Apple (email). Some of them store data outside Canada, mainly in the United States, where courts and authorities there may be able to access it.
How long I keep it
I keep contact messages only as long as I need them and delete old ones from time to time. Copies may stay in my backups until they are replaced. Security and server logs are kept for a limited time.
Your choices
You can ask to see, correct or delete your information through the contact form, and I’ll reply within 30 days. You can unsubscribe at any time. If you’re in Europe, I rely on your consent for subscriptions and on my legitimate interest for replies and security. You can also object, limit use, get a copy of your data, withdraw consent or complain to your local data protection authority. In Canada, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Changes
If anything changes, I’ll update this page and the date at the top.
